I’ve found that I’m especially appealing to ticks, as is my husband….if we’re out walking (on hiking paths, not in long grass) we always seem to end up with one or two ticks each, when our hiking partners do not. After this happened several times, our friend found a research article that showed a relation of tick susceptibility to blood type! “A negative” blood type appears to be especially susceptible….and guess what? My husband and I are both A negative blood types. So we are now SUPER careful at all times, all year round. Who knew??
Glad you had such excellent tick removal expertise just down the road!
A good friend of mine woke up in the middle of the night because she was having trouble breathing. She went to the ER and after multiple tests it was determined she had Alpha-gal syndrome. It’s caused by a tick bite (usually a lone star tick) and causes an allergic reaction to red meat. She had eaten a steak earlier and had a severe reaction. She no longer can eat beef, pork or lamb
A bunch of years back, I was on a friend's remote property foraging ramps in the spring. Something caught my eye and I discovered that I had multiple brown ticks on my body. I was horrified of course- where do you go indeed! I wasn't too far from a good friend's house so I drove there, stripped down to nothing in her garage and she picked all the ticks off of me. Much as I love fresh ramps I have never picked them again, and stay well out of tall, grass or brushy areas. ((Shudder))
Ewww…as the kids would say. As we were falling asleep just a few nights ago, one of our pups was up on the bed staring at a bug on the wall. Yep twas a tick. Courtesy of a puff tissue, out the deck I sent it…..another Ewwww
I don't have a personal tick story. And for that I am grateful. Whew. But I have friends who do. The worst of those involve Alpha-gal syndrome, which is triggered by a tick bite. There is no cure. You have to give up eating red meat, and sometimes dairy, too.
EEEEEK! When we lived in Nashville, we were awakened by bugs crawling up our legs. Turned out to be newly hatched TICKS!!! Our dog and/or cats must have brought them in. Back here on the plains of Colorado, we don’t have them on our grassy yard in town, but I hear they are in the weedier areas in the county and in the mountains.
I live in southeastern Massachusetts, and I’ve had Lyme disease 4 times. Last year I had it in January! I spend a lot of time in my garden, and just won’t do the recommended things like long pants etc. Fortunately doxycycline has been effective during my infections. This year I’ve had 3 bites but noticed them early each time.

My sister has this! It is the strangest thing.

Your bravery in the face of this bodily outrage is inspiring!

My sister came down with this about 18 months ago. Awful.
