I am a naturally shy person who has worked hard to not let it get in my way. Several years ago I attended a standup comedy class run by the late great John Cantu who ran Cantu's Comedy Club in San Francisco. There were 8 students, and we couldn't have been more different from each other. John taught us to access that ephemeral place where the right word, facial expression, body language and timing came together to create the human reaction called laughter. Our 'graduation' was a 10 minute monologue which we had to write, and perform to a live audience AT HIS CLUB! It was terrifying and amazing, and I have never worked so hard in my life. And I killed it!

Great thoughts about comedians. And comedians are such risk-takers, especially in this era. They’re working hard with the real knowledge that they might become villains.
