Australia has collectively lost our minds over our first female competitor in breakdancing. We are not quite sure how she was deemed Olympic standard (and social media is awash with critics) but cannot deny her enthusiasm for the sport or her 'artistic' interpretation that saw her receive a zero score. The Aussie team just cheered her into the closing ceremony aloft on someone's shoulders. Australia rarely supports the underdog in sport, so this is a big moment for us.
Amy - this is my favorite of all of your substack stories - I LOVED the recap, the clips - new and old - the humor - the pathos - the glory - all of it. We needed this. I shared it on social and will continue to share ... it's a gift to all of us...Thank you!
Something has changed from the synchronized swimming of my childhood to the artistic swimming of today. Between all the grimacing, the salutes, and the silent screams, I thought I was watching an SNL parody!
Amy loved this newsletter. What a recap. I want to become a paid subscriber. I’m not sure how to do this since in the beginning I signed for fee. Thanks for writing. Karen
Thanks, Karen! I'm offering all issues during August free of charge, and then the first week of September I'll invite people to subscribe to the paid version. Thank you so much!
You recap is fantastic! I was also surprised at how much I ended up watching and enjoying, usually I'm strictly into the winter figure skating competitions.
Love it! Thank you for these golden glimpses. Yes, indeed, if only all of our world leaders could get along like the athletes who vie for medals. My hubby waited all week to watch USA's freestyle wrestlers compete but was not able to find any videos/coverage in spite of schedules telling when to watch. We do not subscribe to Peacock, but perhaps this is reason to do so!
If I could take the two weeks of the Olympics off every two years, I would do it in a heartbeat. It is thrilling for all the reasons you talked about. A few weeks to see the potential for the best of us as humanity and dreams coming true - so many of those dreams just to make it there. (I may be planning to tune into the Paralympics starting soon with my Olympic geek flag flying high!)
Say it ain't so, Amy!! Please don't dis pickleball until you try it. This is a game that gives you a great workout, physically and mentally (lots of strategy) and you make a ton of friends, old and young. If tennis can be an Olympic event so can pickleball. I know there will be a ground swell of support for it. If you've never seen a professional pickleball game, I encourage you to go to YouTube and see for yourself how fast this game is.

She is the "Eddie the Eagle" of this Olympics, for sure!
All of this, and Snoop Dogg! ❤️
Yes!! His clips have made me so happy!! His true joy of the experience has been so much fun to watch.

Thank you!! I'm very flattered/honored, Roberta!
Love your recap! As a non athlete I share your wonder and appreciation, and I love how you expressed this.
Thank you!

I made that very point in the newsletter (there's a link to the SNL sketch above)

I love your enthusiasm for the Olympics! I just finished the Simone Biles docuseries on Netflix and was blown away by her composure and maturity.
Simone!! My hero, for sure.
