The birds of Arlington have finally stopped dying of an as-yet-unidentified disease that left them blind and was often fatal. I don't know one from another unless they are blue, red, yellow, or a robin or pigeon.

I know a lot of reputable people who like THE MUSIC MAN, so it must be a failing on my part that I do not. And the fact that it beat WEST SIDE STORY for the best musical Tony in 1958 is utterly inexplicable.

Thank you for your lovely musings.

Unfortunately I had to empty my 5 bird baths a month ago or so. My two young cats now go outside and I fear for the little warblers lives! I miss seeing them frolicking in the water, they're so cute and I know very thirsty. Every so often a crow would dive bomb one of the bird baths like a Cadillac falling from the sky! Thank you Amy for your always fun packed newsletter.

50+ years ago I was a pick-a-little lady in our school production of MM. I can still recite, with great vigor & venom, the mean girl speech: "That woman made BRAZEN overtures...!" What fun memories! Thanks!

Oh Amy. This was such fun! Wonderful bird photography - AND musings. Thank you!

As for that Music Man clip, who could possibly watch that without breaking into a big grin! Great fun!

Love you much!

Birds have seemingly always spoken eloquently to humans. Some like ravens and crows (wrongly I think) as dark omens and other like doves are symbols of peace and hope. I like Emily Dickinson's take.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -

And sore must be the storm -

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet - never - in Extremity,

It asked a crumb - of me.

I like THE BIRDS and I love THE MUSIC MAN; plus I never thought I would enjoy listening to "Home on the Range" so much. Thank you for a wonderful newsletter today.

Your post really resonates with me. I just purchased a bird feeder for my backyard and I'm excited to invite them by. Hope to learn which types they are, too. Also, the piece on the Music Man really brought back memories. I was in the musical in high school (in the 80s). Had to listen to "Pick a Little" and "Til There Was You." <Sigh>

I love watching the Birdies. I have seed feeders, peanut feeders and a feeder for the hummingbirds. They are so delightful to watch and they make me smile.
