I'm a "lunch lady" at the college level. Believe me, we "see" the student that needs a little extra attention. Years ago I had a student stop by on his last day of college to say "thank you" to me for talking to him every day. He never held a conversation with me so I didn't know he was listening. That's when I realized being a "lunch lady" mattered!
Wow, Lydia -- that's exactly what the person who wrote that lovely letter was talking about. THANK YOU for being there for young people, and for "seeing" so well.
I ❤️❤️❤️ Matilda! My friend Lauren (who is going to be the maid of honor at my wedding this year!) and I are close in age to Mara Wilson and saw Matilda in the theater when it came out. We loved it so much that we’ve watched it at every other sleepover we’ve ever had, as kids and adults. Thank you for your newsletter Amy, it’s like a little dose of girl talk every week, I enjoy it very very much.
I loved your review of Matilda. Mara attended an OCD Conference that I was at and she was a guest speaker. She has a great sense of humor. I also loved your Lunch Ladies and dough riser. I may try the dough riser. I make sourdough and rosemary bread. Yum.
I was a janitor in a junior high school. The 2 1/2 years I was there, a teacher never so much as said hi to me. I'm a disabled vet, quit in '88 but I haven't forgotten.
That is incredible. I don't think you missed much by that teacher not recognizing you. I have a feeling that person probably wasn't well-liked by her/his peers either.
Okay, I’ve read the Lunch Lady letter and reply twice now, and I love it, but I can’t remember why in the heck the nurses were calling the original writer a lunch lady! Signed, Wondering
I remember the size of their arms! BIG....but not fat!

Another interesting little package of information. Thanks! And I like getting it on Monday.
Thank you, Maggie -- still tweaking the day/time of delivery.

Yes -- Marissa got it right -- "Lunch Lady" was meant as an ageist insult.
I think it was supposed to be a dig at her for being an older woman and maybe just coming in and doing her job instead of playing into their drama.
