I start every single September 11th feeling very sad — especially when the day feels exactly like the day I remember so well from 23 years ago.
And today is that day. Sunny, cloudless, and lovely lovely lovely.
I will spare readers a recitation of my own experiences in Washington DC on that day and the days following, but I will share a link to a unique story produced by my daughter Emily, who was just starting 7th grade in 2001. A week after the attacks, she and I recorded observations from some fellow 7th graders, and Emily followed up with the same students 5 years later. Her story linking the two recording sessions ran on All Things Considered in 2006.
